It is with much sadness that Dorchester Rugby Club marks the passing of former player, and much-loved Gladiators tourist, Mike McKay.

Mike joined the club during Mark Hardwicke’s final period as first team captain in 1965 after initially playing locally for Weymouth. Being short of tight head props, Dorchester were happy to welcome him from over “ridge”, and Mike played with much alacrity, later in his time when playing for the Gladiators, he moved to the back row.

Mike worked in Dorchester at the then Edwards & Edwards accountants, where several other players were also employed.

As his career grew, Mike moved away and played for Ellingham & Ringwood, before moving again to Worcestershire where he played, and then back to Chard, again playing.

As is the way in rugby, Mike kept in touch with all his old clubs and was a Vice President at them all, including being a VP at Dorset & Wilts.

Being a regular benefactor to the club, and particularly Glad’s lunches, Mike first toured with them in Latvia 2001, with his last tour being Vienna in 2016.

Details on the funeral

Private family cremation followed by wake at Market Bosworth Rugby Club from 12.30. I know Mike wanted to buy one last round for all his old rugby mates so you will be very welcome to share some memories.

Fondly remembered, rest in peace Mike.
