It is with great sadness that everyone at Dorchester Rugby Club learned of the passing of long time member, player, Vice-President, and loyal supporter, Roger Brewer.
Roger captained the Colts in 1969, leading the side on tour to South Wales to face Ammanford and Loughor, before going on to represent the club across the senior sides. After his playing days, Roger remained a constant presence on the touchline, supporting generations of players with his knowledge, humour, and encouragement.
Alongside his brother Dave, Roger was one of the club’s most loyal supporters. More recently, he could always be found at “scoreboard corner” with fellow supporters Frank Dike and Kevin Goodfellow. Roger was hugely knowledgeable about the game, always up to date with Dorchester’s league position, and was known for explaining new rules to those around him usually while handing out sweets at half-time.
Roger and Dave also played a huge part behind the scenes at the club, organising the very first Dorchester Rugby Club Bonfire Night, which became one of the club’s biggest fundraising events. Before the move to an electric scoreboard, Roger and the “far side” supporters even volunteered to operate the old manual scoreboard a place that remained their regular viewing spot for years.
Roger will be missed greatly by so many at the club, but his humour, friendship, and dedication to Dorchester Rugby Club will never be forgotten.
Everyone at Dorchester Rugby Club sends sincere condolences to Roger’s family and friends.
Roger’s funeral will take place at 1:00pm on Monday 18th May at Weymouth Crematorium, followed by a gathering at Dorchester Rugby Club from 2:30pm. Those attending are warmly invited to wear Dorchester Rugby Club ties if possible.
